Specialist clothing chains and non-supermarket chains prospered in 2014

The Office for National Statistics this morning published its expenditure by place of purchase datasets for 2014.

The pattern to emerge from both the average weekly expenditure per household and total weekly expenditure is one of no growth within supermarket chain purchases although both specialist clothing chains and other outlets (inc. internet shopping) saw consumer expenditure grow.

Breaking the figures down further shows it was the purchase of mens outer garments from specialist clothing stores and womens outer garments from other outlets were the key drivers in these increased sales and illustrate increasing potential changes in consumer shopping habits.
